Stop Malaria campaign!

Your donation will make a big difference in saving lives in The Gambia.

In the Gambia, the cost of meeting the demands of a healthy populace remains a daunting task. Despite the numerous cases of other diseases, malaria proves a thorn in the flesh in the country, killing a larger proportion of the population. The most vulnerable groups is children under 5 and pregnant mothers.

The disease is aggravating the scourge of poverty, disrupting the livelihood of families, and far too often steals the future of lives in the Gambia and elsewhere in sub Saharan Africa.

The Gambia - a small poor country in West Africa has not been spared by the plague of the malaria epidemic that continues to ravage Africa. Though a lot of efforts have been made by the government and other concern organizations, towards eradicating the disease by providing bed nets and cost effective means, malaria continues to be a major public health problem in the country, accounting for over 40% of hospital visits and being the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the country. More malaria cases occur during the rainy season, where the collection of water in tins and waterlogged areas provides a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Therefore, in a bid to contribute its quota to the fight against malaria in The Gambia, Global Unification-The Gambia in partnership with Africa stop Malaria foundation, Barcelona, every year during the rainy season organizes the Stop Malaria Campaign, whose aim is to raise money to buy insecticide treated bed nets for free distribution to poor villages in the country. The program also provides community training on malaria prevention and control.

The first and second phases of the campaign were carried out in August and December 2008 respectively and over 1500 bed nets were distributed to communities such as Mandinaring, Lamin, Siffoe and Makumbaya.

This year, the program is set for the 4th August to 14th of August 2009. However, to effectively carry it out, we lean on the financial support of individuals and groups interested in the welfare of children and poor communities in Africa. Your financial support can make a real difference in eradicating malaria in the country. We therefore urge you to join the crusade to terminate this dreadful disease that is hampering the development efforts of most developing countries.
